Do you want to write a story for the SHCC website or the e-newsletter? Part of the Sugar House Community Council’s mission is to educate our residents and businesses and engage them in the processes and issues that affect Sugar House. An important way to do that is through writing stories that appear in the e-newsletter (sent monthly) and on the sugarhousecouncil.org website.
In order to ensure a consistent experience for our readers, the SHCC Outreach Committee has established the following standards for these stories.
- Stories should be no longer than 250 words. A short story works much better for online content, since many readers may not scroll far beyond one screen’s worth of content. Plus we are all busy, and a word limit inspires clarity and brevity, which our readers will appreciate.
- Include a photo. Readers respond to the visual appeal of a photo; additionally, depending on the nature of your story, a photo can help illustrate a point you are trying to make. Especially with online content, a photo will compel people to click and read your story.
- The tone and content should be informative, not persuasive. In other words, the purpose of a story should be to inform Sugar House residents and businesses about something that is happening; the story is not the place to take a position or argue for a course of action. The story should answer basic questions like: who, what, why, where and include links for interested people to learn more or to comment on an issue.
- Email your story submission and photo to email@example.com by the third Thursday of the month. Accepted stories will normally be included in the e-newsletter sent in advance of the SHCC Trustees meeting on the first Wednesday of the next month.
