CELEBRATE SUGAR HOUSE HISTORIC SIGNS
The Utah Heritage Foundation has created a walking tour of the Sugar House business district and our historic signs. You can download the app from their website using Google Play or the App Store. Don’t miss out on this fun walking tour and learn some about our historic signs and maybe pick up a few new tidbits.
The Historic Signs committee has been hard at work trying to save our signs and restore them one by one. Most recently the Steering Stark sign was restored to its neon glory, the Snelgrove ice cream cones have been painted and are not rotating (we have saved the Snelgrove sign), Sputnik is mostly operational after years of darkness. The committee has also been working with Council Representative Lisa Adams and Salt Lake City zoning to change the ordinance to allow for restoration of historic signs throughout the city. Most of these old signs need repair that require them to be removed. Current zoning regulations will not allow them to be reinstalled so they remain in disrepair.
We are currently trying to create a complete list of signs throughout Sugar House. If you know of a sign that is not in the business district that you want to make sure is saved please let us know.
