MINUTES

1)  Welcome/Neighborhood Bash/Fire Dept./Det. Fallows

  • Landon welcomed everyone to the meeting. The Neighborhood Bash will be on August 24th from 11 am.- 4pm at the Neighborhood Hive.
  • Fire Dept. is in the middle of the strategic plan. It happens every 5 years. Please share input as to what the Fire Dept. can do! Go to www.slcfire.com and you’ll see the link for the questionnaire.
  • Det. Fallows For July, there were 91 total crimes, mostly property. Violent crime is mostly down across the city. SLCPD has more of a presence in Fairmont. Sugar House Coffee has recently had some vandalism and also had their fence hit in a “hit and run.” SLCPD does some “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design,” or CPTED. If you have issues like this, please reach out to Det. Fallows and there may be a CPTED solution. There are fewer traffic officers now than there were before Covid. If you want to report an incident along the S-Line make sure you make clear that it is happening on the trail portion as this is within SLC’s jurisdiction. If it is happening on the rails that is UTA’s jurisdiction. If you see traffic violations, that is a good thing to report through Speed Watch.

2)  Sugar House Chamber/Sugar House Station

  • Brandon and Erika discussed the Neighborhood Bash.
  • Mark Issac discussed Sugar House Station. It will be in the location where Kimi’s Chop House was located. It will be a “bar hall.” It will be a bar and also feature Aristos, Cannellas, Publiks, the Bird House, and Proper Burger. There will be 6 food stations and 4 alcohol stations, one of which will be “Sugar House Station” which will be beers from around the world. It all launches next week.

3)  New Trustee Kim Paturzo

  • Kim’s has lived in the neighborhood of 1000 E and 1700 S. She has a massage therapy business in her house. She is a candidate for an at large position as she lives and works here in Sugar House. The was a motion and second for her candidacy. The motion passed unanimously among the trustees at the meeting.

4)  Construction Update

  • Bill gave up update. Street construction is coming along as are other construction projects currently underway in Sugar House.
  • Construction along 1100 E is almost complete! There will also be some new traffic configurations on the 2100 S rebuild. There are old trolly lines under 2100 S that will have to be dug up as part of the reconstruction.

5)  Friends of Fairmont/Kids from ACE Mentor Program/Rio Grande Plan

  • A botonist is coming on August 13 at 6 pm.
  • The program is at the Sizzler site. It is an architecture, construction, and engineering program. The project envisions a restaurant and event center. The idea is to have a restaurant and event space with indoor/outdoor facilities, and lots of outdoor seating. It is envisioned to be xeriscaped. The building would have sustainability components (like auto-tinting glass) and the students estimate it would cost ~$9M.
  • Fredrick Jenny presented the Rio Grande Plan. The plan would place rail tracks into a “train box” along 500 W. It would “bury” the train track and eliminate “at grade” crossings while allowing the Rio Grande Depot to once again function as the Amtrak Depot. The freight trains, Amtrak, and Front Runner trains would all run side-by-side through the same tunnel. Please fill out and send a postcard to your elected officials but especially the mayor!

6)  Hannah and Sarah

  • The City is looking at consolidating some zoning districts into a small subset of districts. You can get more information and see an interactive map of the proposal at www.slc.gov/planning. The City is also hosting walking tours throughout the City to show what this would look like. The one is Sugar House is on August 13 from 6 – 7. Meet at the Sugar House Park Big Pavillion. There is a discussion at the Planning Commission as to whether to eliminate parking in some of these new zones but no firm decision on that has yet been made.
  • Sarah Young gave a shout out to Det. Fallows. There will be a land use meeting on the 19th for a proposed rezone on a parcel in Sugar House that would allow for a building height of 150 feet. Height and parking is a key aspect of zone consolidation and is part of a continuing conversation for propose rezoning. Please participate in events where you can express you opinion on these issues. Please also let Sarah know about how you feel about proposed compensation increases for elected officials. Sarah discussed the fact that the City is still in the process of discussing what the new sports and entertainment district will look like. One thing we don’t want is to lose all our sports teams: this would be a big hit for downtown. The City got the 2034 Olympics which is very exciting. The Highland High school bond is on the ballot this year: this is an important piece to making sure Highland High can serve school kids well into the future! Please support Sugar House Coffee if you can or spread the word to those who might be able to do that.
  • Trevor discussed the $1M art grant from Bloomberg. The City selected 12 artists; Trevor is the artist for District 7. The are looking for a wall for the project. Please let him know if you have a wall for a mural; the art will be about the Great Salt Lake. Please check out his website at www.goodhappystuff.com.
  • Laurie discussed an event that will take place on the Sugar House plaza this Friday. Please stop by!
