Thriving in Place – The Salt Lake City Planning Commission voted to forward a positive recommendation to the City Council for the adoption of the Thriving in Place plan. Salt Lake City spent the last two years working with a consultant to understand displacement and gentrification in the city. Staff gathered over 2,500 public comments in this time period. After conducting studies and gathering community input, six key findings were identified. From these findings, the city was able to form goals to combat displacement pressures. The proposed plan will work to protect tenants, preserve existing affordable housing, and produce more affordable housing.
The SHBD elimination of drive-throughs in CSHBD1 and 2, and the rezone of 1782 S 1600 East is probably on the City Council agenda for a vote on September 5. You still have time to send comments to council.comments@slcgov.com.
At our Land Use and Zoning Meeting (LUZ) on August 21, we discussed Woodland Commons. This is a request to rezone 2445 S 500 East from R-1/7000 to RMF-35, the same as the previous request for 2435 S 500 East. The building design for each will be a separate process, we already saw 2435 and that is waiting to go to the Planning Commission, and 2445 will come back to us at some point for approval of its Planned Development before it goes to the Planning Commission.
We also talked about 2903 S Highland Drive, and the request for an extra 3’ of height for the east building, because a portion of the roof of that building will be deck space, which requires a parapet wall. They also want a reduction of glass on the first floor, and a slight increase in the allowed building size.
The third item is a request from the city regarding window requirements for new construction in the city’s Local Historic Districts. They would like vinyl to be allowed as a use for windows that are not in the public or private right-of-way.The proposal is very poorly worded and we cannot support it as written.

Maybe you are driving, or walking and see a problem, like a yard full of junk, or a street sign that is broken, or remodeling without a permit. The app SLCMOBILE can be put on your phone. When you see an issue, take a photo or two, and send a comment and your name along with the photo to the city using the app. The city can pinpoint the issue from the gps on the photo, and forward the problem on to the proper department to fix the issue. If you get a response in a bit that says “completed” that means they have forwarded it on to the right person, that does not mean the issue is cleared up. Be sure to keep tabs and bug the city if it doesn’t get corrected.
