[caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] When people hear about my involvement in the community council many voice that they don't know what it is that we do. That is a fair question. I first got involved in the community council because I wanted to stay on top of all the development going on in my neck of the woods. Little by little I saw how my participation had the potential to make a difference in my community. I met some amazing people that had been giving their time and talents for years to the community without recognition or fanfare and I realized my belief that one person can make a difference was right in front of me. I have viewed the community council as a voice for our neighborhoods, but more importantly an avenue by which to help others participate and learn more about what goes on. To that end we try and do outreach to keep you all up to date, but we are all volunteers and many of us have full-time jobs so it can be challenging. But we all believe it matters.
February 2015 [caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] Local First CVS Pharmacy is purchasing the property at 1300 E 2100 S where the car wash currently sits.  Representatives of this project will be at the February 4th meeting so you can come and learn more and comment. While CVS pharmacy folks have been very open and receptive to our ideas and feedback many of the comments I have received have been the lament of another chain store in the neighborhood.  One of the reasons I love living in Sugar House is the eclectic combination of locally owned stores, but I know that many prefer chains as well.  I hope we have a community big enough for all of them.

We finally have snow, which means sledding at Sugar House Park.  It also means we need to keep our sidewalks clear of snow and ice.  You can read more about the ordinance and learn about the responsibility of the resident.  If you are able please help those neighbors that may need assistance in clearing their walks as well. Sugar House is full of hidden gems.  To me Fairmont Park is one of those places.  My mother has wonderful stories of riding her bike to Fairmont Park to swim in the outdoor pool, saunter over to the Forest Dale clubhouse for ice cream and a walk along the witches trail on a dare.
December 2014 What is a sense of place? Amy Barry Westminster I have often asked myself this question in relation to places I find special.  Mostly this question has been to my love for wilderness areas and being lost in a desert or canyon where I can barely comprehend the time and natural forces that created these landscapes.  However, more recently I have begun thinking about the importance of place as it is related to my home community of Sugar House. One of my favorite quotes comes from Wallace Stegner who stated "... talking about the knowledge of place that comes from working in it in all weathers, making a living from it, suffering from its catastrophes, loving its mornings or evenings or hot noons, valuing it for the profound investment of labor and feeling that you, your parents and grandparents, your all-but-unknown ancestors have put into it."
